How to Choose a Cruise Destination in 2009

2009 is geared to be a hot year for cruises! Families that plan their sailing trips well end up having the most success when it comes to great destinations and money savings.

The industry today offers many great deals, even in financial hard times. The key is to look for "free airfare, two-fers and free passage for kids," according to Frommers. "The cruise industry is the most growth-oriented in the world," they add.

Where to get bargain cruises

Bargain hunters and people on a budget need to join travel clubs prior to their trips. Frommers says that often these clubs offer free memberships for 30 days, and give you free airline tickets and great discounts on hotels. Many travel clubs have unsold inventory of air tickets and cruise-ship bookings offering discounts in the usual range of 20% to 60%.

Another place to get great discounts on cruises is through rebators. "These outfits pass along part of their commission to the passenger, although many rebators assess a fee for their services...most rebators offer anywhere from 10% to 25% off published fares."

Where to call to get a great cruise package

Often people don't know where to start when it comes to taking a cruise. Below are a few cruise specialists to consider.

All-Travel (tel. 866/565-3214; www.all-travel.com/cruises)

Cruise Brothers (tel. 800/827-7779; www.cruisebrothers.com)

CruisesOnly (tel. 800/278-4737; www.cruisesonly.com)

The Cruise Marketplace (tel. 800/826-4333; www.cruisemarketplace.com)

Just Cruisin' Plus (tel. 800/888-0922; www.justcruisinplus.com)

Vacation Outlet (tel. 800/690-2210; www.vacationoutlet.com)

Vacation Shoppe (tel. 866/7-CRUISE; www.vacationshoppe.com)

These sites often feature excellent specials, which include everything you want on a cruise vacation.

Hot Destinations for 2009

This year, many people are staying closer to home because of gas prices, but despite it all, some of the hottest cruise destinations include 3-4 day packages to the Bahamas and the Caribbean. "So far, the Med is the fourth-most-booked itinerary for 2009, just behind the Mexican Riviera, according to agents surveyed by Cruise Holidays, a Minneapolis-based network of more than 100 cruise retailers. (The Caribbean is No. 1 and Alaska No. 2.) Overall, the survey found, the network's agents last year took 42% more bookings for Europe than in the previous year," reports the LA Times

Though many are staying close to home, some are splurging and going far away to places like Asia, South America and Europe. Many seek an adventure in an exotic destination that isn't the same old, same old.

CNN travel reports, "The Cruise Lines International Association estimates that 12.6 million people cruised worldwide in 2007 on the 24 cruise lines CLIA represents, a 4.6 percent increase over 2006. CLIA believes demand will hold, with a projected 12.8 million passengers for 2008 despite the weakening economy. A recent CLIA survey of 500 travel agents found 90 percent expect 2009 cruise sales to be as good or better than 2007."

No matter where you plan to cruise this year, remember that booking early is important. Make sure you have a passport if necessary and choose a cruise line with a good reputation. Happy sailing, shipmates!

Getting to Know a Country Through Its People

For those traveling to Kenya, there is much to see in terms of touristic hot spots, including the beautiful Lake Victoria. Taking a boat cruise of any sort is worth it. But besides the usual destinations found in various countries, it's good to get to know the people who impact daily life.

For example, Wangethi-Mwangi; he is veteran journalist who currently serves as Editorial Director for the largest media company in Kenya –Nation Media Group. He is also the editorial director for the Nairobi newspaper The Daily Nation.

Wangethi-Mwangi, like many, in Kenya, believes in free press. Like most journalists true to his trade, Wangethi-Mwangi has been a strong advocate for the independence campaign of Kenya. This means he has championed the cause of democracy in his work and in his words.

As you travel and cruise to various destinations, get to know the people who are strong voices in the community; those who make an impact through their daily dedication to a cause and a nation.

This means just about everything is included in one price!

Cruise Mediterranean: Where does it take me exactly?

The great thing about a cruise Mediterranean style escape is the fact that you can take in so many sites within 10-11 days, depending on which package your purchase.

Greek Islands

A cruise Mediterranean style escape can take you to the Greek islands, if you so choose. Depending on the cruise line, you’re likely to see Piraeus (Athens), Mykonos, Kusadasi (Ephessos), Patmos, Rhodes, Heraklio (Crete), Santorini, and Piraeus (Athens).

Eastern Mediterranean

A cruise Mediterranean style escape might also take you to the Eastern Mediterranean to destinations such as Piraeus (Athens), Canakkale, Pylos, Balboa, Djebra, Malta, Gozo Isl., Naples, Messina (Taormina), Corfu, Parga, Ithaca, Katakolo (Olympia), Corinth Canal, and Piraeus (Athens).

Western Mediterranean

Another wonderful cruise Mediterranean style escape might take you to the western part of the Mediterranean to Piraeus (Athens), Corinth Canal, Capri, Nice (Monte Carlo), Barcelona, Ibiza (Balearic Isles), Malaga, Gibraltar (BCC), Tangier, Lisbon, Vigo, St.Helier, Zeebrugge, Ijmuiden (Amsterdam), and Dover.

Taking a Theme Cruise Mediterranean Venture

Many travelers enjoy theme cruise Mediterranean ventures to places like Nice (Monte Carlo), Genoa (Portofino), Civitavecchia (Rome), Corinth, Corinth Canal, Piraeus (Athens), Kavala-Philippi, Kusadasi (Ephessos), Antalya-Attalia, Iskenderun, Limassol, Heraklio (Crete), Syracuse, Naples, and Genoa (Portofino).

Ask your travel agent for specifics on length of stay and port destinations. Usually you’ll have time to shop, visit the city a bit and even have a meal, if you so desire. If a cruise Mediterranean style escape is for you, don’t hesitate in making plans today!

Want to take a Cruise?

For a Cruise Mediterranean, or any other type of vacation in this area, you’ll want to take the normal things you take on vacation, plus make sure you think of the time of year you’re traveling. Pack conservatively, and plan on leaving room in your suitcases for souvenirs and gifts. Once the ship docks, you’ll be running around shopping all over the wonderful, little towns, in search of that perfect souvenir. Cruises are a wonderful way to see so much in so little time.

Taking a Caribbean Cruise

Caribbean cruises are fast becoming the most popular of all cruise vacations and it is not surprising. The affordability of these cruise liners makes it possible for even younger people to experience them. Everything you could possibly want is there at hand with wonderful Caribbean island locations, a new one each day, and every creature comfort on board the cruise liner. How long you sail is up to your budget and what standard of cabin you want, but these tours can be add-ons for other vacations or as long as fourteen or more days.

The great thing about cruising is that these ships have immense experience in catering for just about all tastes; so whether you just want to relax on the deck or want a full itinerary of events, they will be able to supply exactly what you want. If anything, you will have a hard time keeping up with everything that you can possibly do on a cruise liner.

In any situation where you are spending a great deal of money, it is worth checking out a few details that should put you on the right track. Your travel agency will be a good place to start. Don't forget that there are a large number of Caribbean islands, so cruise liners have arranged packages which reflect certain island themes. They cannot visit every island in such a short space of time.

Some cruise vacations to the Caribbean are for people that like to party with plenty of discos and non-stop entertainment and may not be the ideal place for families. Some Caribbean cruise liner companies actually produce virtual tours and other information on DVD's which you can get from your travel agent, or order them online.

Besides the usual, you need to pack suitable attire for many occasions like formal evening wear, as well as beach, deck and other casual wear. It might also be a good idea to have a tuxedo for men and an evening gown for women as part of your attire.

There are also plenty of activities if you take your children along on a cruise vacation. They will probably burn off all their energy by the time the evening has ended. A wide variety of activities are planned for them so that you can spend the time to do what you like. Trained staff will look after them so you can put your mind at ease while you are enjoying and relaxing with your spouse.

Some Caribbean cruises are specifically for adults only, which is ideal for couples, honeymooners and people that would like to have a child-free vacation. Special occasions can be made extra special on board a cruise liner, whether it is for an anniversary or a honeymoon; various packages and upgrades can be arranged.

A Caribbean cruise vacation is the ideal venue for singles, couples and for families as everyone is looked after with a multitude of activities available; no-one ever feels left out.
